Certain parts of our fan base are in a confused state of mind. On one hand, they don't want to expect much from this season due to:
  • New manager
  • Transfer ban
  • Loss of key players
  • Lots of youth players needing time to integrate
  • New footballing ideas/style to implement
On the other hand, these same fans demand our club to purchase big-name signings once the ban is over.

Now, isn't this expectation leading to a contradiction? Let's say, for instance, we fail to secure a top 4 position in the Premier League this season. Is it wise to think that players such a Lautaro Martinez and Jadon Sancho, whose respective clubs will most likely be in the Champions League next season, will be willing to come to Chelsea? Why will these top superstars want to leave their respective clubs, who are in the Champions League, for a team who's not?

Look at Manchester United and Arsenal for a moment. Both the clubs aren't in the Champions League this season and most likely won't be next season either. It would mean a third straight season for Arsenal not being in the Champions League. Are any of these clubs attractive for a rising superstar to join? Competition is so intense in the Premier League that you can't even guarantee a top 4 spot anymore unless you are Liverpool or Manchester City. Several big teams fighting for 4 spots. Then you throw in a surprise package like Leicester and the matter becomes extremely difficult.

So, would it be right to say that there's a direct correlation between achieving a top 4 position in the Premier League and acquiring top class players? If yes, then we better start hoping we finish in top 4 and align our expectations accordingly. If no, then as long as we don't get related, we have nothing to complain about.

Frank said it himself when he took the job that, Chelsea has certain standards that can't be dropped. He further went on to say that, he won't be using this season as an excuse regardless of the adversities. There's enough talent in our squad to achieve the top 4 as reflected in our position in the table right now.

Simple equation:

Achieve top 4 → ammunition to acquire the top players
Fail to achieve top 4 → attracting top players becomes harder

Expecting anything else leads to contradiction.....
