Recap of the game

On paper, Chelsea put out a fairly strong team and this was reflected in the first 15 minutes as Chelsea went on a 0-1 lead after 10 minutes. However, after the first 15 minutes, Chelsea failed to capitalize on consequent opportunities and decision-making skills started to disappear rapidly. The front four of Tammy, Mount, Willian, and Pulisic all had great opportunities to take advantage of in the first half but their decision making let them down. Nonetheless, Chelsea went into the break being 0-1 up but you could sense a certain change in momentum.

In the second half, Brighton made a tactical change right from the get-go. They completely dominated the half and thoroughly deserved the late equalizer through a world-class overhead kick by Jahanbakhsh. If anything they probably even deserved the win had it not been for Kepa's brilliant saves.

Key Moments

  • 10th minute - Azpi goal from a corner after Mooy failed to clear the ball
  • 27th minute - Tammy had attracted 2 defenders which left the door open for Willian out wide but Tammy decided not to lay it off to Willian and ended up having his shot blocked
  • 43rd minute - 1st of Kepa's big saves of the match
  • 80th minute - 2nd of Kepa's big saves of the match
  • 84th minute - Jahanbakhsh's world-class equalizer from a failed corner clearance
  • 88th minute - Callum Hudson-Odoi comes tantalizingly close to scoring
  • 89th minute - Kepa makes his 3rd huge save of the match to keep the score at 1-1
Best Players

A massive shout out to Kepa who's saves kept Chelsea in the game and ultimately managed to obtain at least a point from it.

Special mention to Reece James as well due to his strength and crossing abilities.

Here are some keys stats outlined by @ChelseaCentral_ on Twitter -

Worst Players

  • The front 4 of Tammy, Willian, Mount, and Pulisic were supremely ineffective. They all worked hard but end product was predominantly not there. Decision making was at times atrocious.
  • Rudiger in defence was constantly shaky
  • Although Azpi scored a goal he is definitely not the answer at left-back
  • Kovacic had a performance to forget off the bench
  • 2nd half besides Kepa everyone else had a below-par game
Final statement on the result

Once again Chelsea fails to capitalize off the back of a great result on the previous match and once again they fail to turn up against lower table team. Having said that, once again Chelsea has been bailed out by their immediate rivals as they all suffered a loss (Wolves, Spurs and Man U). Chelsea's still 4th which is probably the only shining light at the moment but the lack of consistency won't go unpunished all the time by the rivals. January window is upon us, let's see what happens.
