How does Soumare compare statistically to Olmo, Bruno, Jorginho, Bakayoko & Moussa Sissoko, is he really worth the hype? First thing you notice when you watch any Soumare compilation this season is how few the duels he's involved in. He has low disruption/recovery especially compared to Jorginho, Bakayoko & Bruno. Very low aerial & ground duels, which is weird for a DM of his physique. Although he's involved a lot on the ball, his decision making is slow, many times he misses very good pass options before settling for a square pass or a flashy long switch. His lack of scanning & awareness before getting on the ball limits his vision. He seems to only scan on the ball dribbling & by then it's too late, an opponent's already recovered or a teammate's covered/offside. But for all his dribbling, he loses a lot of ground duels in possession, so either he wins a lot of fouls or he's not very press-resistant. So, he's not good defensively, can't press & limited creatively. I don't know how he fits in a team like Chelsea that press high & leave gaps in midfield or any high pressing 433 like Liverpool. And regarding his press-resistance, what happens when he's man-marked in buildup? Anyway, here are a couple graphics comparing Soumare to Olmo, Bruno. I also added Bakayoko, Jorginho & Sissoko for context. Data is from smarterscout, I normalised defensive quality & quantity into a single metric. Also, I use aerial duels from open play.
