At the start of the season, it was quite obvious that some of the talented Chelsea youngsters could find themselves on a loan move.

In central defense, Chelsea had Christensen, Tomori, Zouma, and Rudiger. In midfield, Chelsea had a plethora of options. Therefore it was of no surprise that Ampadu was the man who would most likely go out on a loan move to continue his development. The majority of the fan base was even more elated when it was announced that Ampadu was to join the exciting German team, RB Leipzig, under Julian Nagelsmann.

However, the initial excitement of the Chelsea fan base did not transpire into the expectation they had on this loan move. As of 11/03/2020, these are Ampadu's contribution for RB Leipzig:

  • 30/10/2019 - played 19 mins against Wolfsburg
  • 02/11/2019 - played 39 mins against Mainz 05
  • 09/11/2019 - played 15 mins against Hertha BSC
  • 27/11/2019 - played 55 mins against Benfica
  • 10/12/2019 - played 39 mins against Olympique Lyonnais
  • 15/02/2020 - played 33 mins against Werder Bremen
  • 19/02/2020 - played 96 mins against Tottenham Hotspur
A mere total of 296 mins played across all club competitions this season. Sure, he's had slight injuries in between but these numbers are hardly enough for any sort of development, especially for a youngster.

With only a handful of games left in this season, this can be deemed as an unsuccessful loan spell overall. There's no doubt Ampadu would've learnt a lot from Nagelsmann in terms of footballing knowledge. However, practical experience is far greater in this trade than theoretical knowledge, especially at such a young age.

So what have we learned?

It is very important that next season Chelsea has the same focus for loanees as they will for acquiring quality recruitments. There has to be a proper plan in place for all loanees, especially the talented ones. Connor Gallagher is a fine example of a loan spell that's supremely successful for the player and Chelsea football club. His development plan needs to be studied as it poses as a great reference for future loanees.

Next season whether Ampadu is part of the first-team squad or he's offloaded for another loan spell, he must get ample game time. He simply cannot have another wasted season as he's too talented for it.
