This season has been a rollercoaster with lots of ups and downs. Chelsea has endured some great results this season but it has had its fair share of embarrassing defeats. Defeat tally for Chelsea this season is 12 which is unfamiliar territory for the club. But the following 5 defeats for me remain the worst matches Chelsea has played this season which are:
1. Chelsea 0-1 Valencia (17th September 2019):
After one of the best performances just three days back against Wolves, Chelsea fell to a 1-0 surprising defeat against Valencia at Stamford Bridge. From the penalty miss by Ross Barkley, to Mount's injury because of a hard tackle from Coquelin, overall a bad day at the office for Chelsea. This matched also showed a pattern to beat Chelsea which was recurring in the winter season where Chelsea lost 7 out of their last 17 matches. This defeat proved pivotal in Chelsea finishing runners up in their Champions League group which put them into a Mammoth tie against Bayern Munich. This doesn't apply that Chelsea would have got someone easier if they had finished first but there is no denying that the Chelsea of today is not capable of beating Bayern.
2. Everton 3-1 Chelsea (7th December 2019):
Everton was coming into this match on the back of three defeats in a row where they had conceded 9 goals and had recently been battered 5-2 by Liverpool away. Their manager was sacked after the Liverpool game and Duncan Ferguson was put in charge of handling the match. Chelsea had been stuttering too with defeats to West ham and Man City in the last three games and they needed to win this match to gain ahead in Top 4 race. But the performance that was followed at Goodison Park has to be described as one of the worst away performance Chelsea had put in the whole season. They were embarrassed 3-1 by Everton and the defending that day could only be described as horrific. The only good thing to come out of it was the stunning goal by Kovacic. To make the day worse for Chelsea, all of their rivals were victorious and reduced their gap on Chelsea. After this result, Chelsea only acquired 19 points from the next 13 games and the lead was reduced to 3 points as of now.
3. Chelsea 0-2 Southampton (26th December 2019):
This was the match that started Southampton's upward surge in the Premier League table. Chelsea already had lost two of their last three games at Stamford Bridge against West ham and Bournemouth and Southampton was a chance to rectify it. Lampard's second win against Mourinho in his managerial career four days back was considered a turning point in the season for this young Chelsea side after they dispatched Spurs 2-0 away, but Chelsea's inconsistencies had no end. They had no answer for the stern defensive performance by Southampton even after having 2/3rd of the possession in the match. It was a very embarrassing performance from Chelsea and this was their 4th defeat in the last six matches which allowed other teams to cut the gap for Top 4. The lack of cutting edge Chelsea showed in the final box spoke highly of the lack of firepower option and a need for some reinforcements in the transfer window which unfortunately did not happen.
4. Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea (18th January 2020):
Newcastle came into this match with one win in their last six matches which stretched back to 21st December 2019. They drew only one game and lost four with conceding 11 goals in these six games. Chelsea came into this in a good vein of form having acquired 7 points out of the last three games. Last year Chelsea broke their wretched record of no wins at St. James Park which stretched to a total of five matches where they incurred four losses and a draw. A 2-1 win last year was thought to be a start of Chelsea's better outcomes at this stadium but they again came empty-handed after conceding a 94th-minute goal.

With Tottenham and Arsenal both dropping points on the same day and United having to face Liverpool, Chelsea had a golden opportunity to gain a larger distance in the Top 4 race, but they suffered a similar occurrence which had been going on for them in the previous two months. The match followed in the same direction for Chelsea where they had 70% possession and had some openings which they didn't capitalise on and made an avoidable error in defence. It looked like they'll hang on for a goalless draw but a howler from the defence and questionable keeping from the goalkeeper led to a 1-0 defeat. For Chelsea fans, this defeat was frustrating as they saw the same pattern following in every defeat. After this match, Chelsea went winless in the next three matches and as of present only lead in Top 4 by a mere three points which could be reduced to two if Sheffield wins their game in hand.
5. Chelsea 0-3 Bayern Munich (25th February 2020):
Chelsea came into the match on the back of a moralising victory against arch-rivals Tottenham. Lampard went with the same lineup which yielded a solid performance against Spurs 3 days back. They had some injury problems which led to a defensive line-up. Bayern had struggled for clean sheets in the Champions League conceding in half out of their total group matches. Lewandowski had already scored whopping 10 goals in the Champions League and increased it to 11 against Chelsea. The first half was a show of Bayern's regular attacks and Chelsea's spirited defensive efforts. Chelsea's defensive issues again came back to bite them with Bayern scoring two goals in space of 3 minutes in the next half.

Chelsea only had one clean sheet in the Champions League and that misery continued against Bayern. A day where no Chelsea fan would have been stunned at the outcome as it was expected from the start, but what concerned everyone was the gulf in class between the two sides. Bayern had been able to call Coutinho, Goretzka, and Tolisso from the substitute bench and increased their lead by 3 goals to nil. This defeat was a testament of how far Chelsea has fallen in the last five years with their last round of 16 triumph in this competition that stretches back to 2014.
These were the five worst defeats of the season for me. We knew that this season was going to be tough and there were going to be major low points, but even after that we have a three-point lead over the fifth place and need to cut out defeats like these to get the Champions League spot. Overall, finishing in the Champions League spot will result in a successful season and Chelsea can build upon it for future successes.
