Napoli are giving up on retaining Dries Mertens after contract extension talks broke down, according to reports in Italy.

Mertens contract at Napoli will expire at the end of this season and it appears his future lies elsewhere with Chelsea one of the teams credit with an interest in the Belgian forward.

Chelsea failed to sign him on loan in the January transfer window, prompting renewed talks Napoli and the striker's representatives with Napoli reportedly offered him a two-year contract worth €4 million a year, plus €2 million sign-on bonus.

However, it seems that wasn't enough to convince the 32-year-old to stay at the Stadio San Paolo, bringing Chelsea back into the picture.
