The 2019/2020 season has been a rollercoaster campaign for Chelsea. There have been so many highs and lows. However, the bright spot certainly has to be the emergence of the young guns. Before the season started, so many people were unsure of what to expect but as the season progressed we found out that this Chelsea team can get to the top if one or two issues are sorted.

In the games Chelsea has played well this season, they have taken their opponents apart. Everton at home, Spurs home and away, Ajax away, not forgetting the victory at the Molineaux in October.

On the flip side, in the games Chelsea has played badly this season, they have been horrible. The performances against Bayern Munich and Everton at Stamford Bridge and Goodison Park certainly comes to mind.

There have also been a few games when Frank Lampard’s team was in control but failed to take advantage of the moment. The home game against Arsenal and the European super cup in Istanbul are perfect examples.

So, there is a huge debate on how far this Chelsea team can go and what they need to compete with the likes of City and Liverpool. Let us break it down.

More goals from Tammy Abraham

When Chelsea won the league under Carlo Ancelotti, Anelka and Didier Drogba scored goals consistently. Antonio Conte did the same thing with Diego Costa. While Abraham isn’t yet at the level Costa was under Conte, he has shown that he can surpass the Spaniard albeit their styles are different. Although he has reached double figures in the premier league, it isn’t enough. Frank has placed his trust in him and he needs to carry the team with goals. Teams that have won the league title recently have done it with a striker that can score at least 20 league goals.

More goals from midfield players

Frank Lampard scored at least 20 league goals consistently in his career despite playing from midfield. He is the coach now and he wouldn’t be wrong to expect something similar from his midfield players. Mason Mount hasn’t done badly (at least for a young midfield player) despite criticisms and scrutiny. His work rate is superb and he has scored 9 goals in all competitions this season (including friendlies). There are a few similarities between Frank Lampard and Ross Barkley in terms of style of play but the goal involvement of the later depends on how much game time he gets from the former.

The wide men also need to step up. Christian Pulisic hasn’t impacted the team much this season largely because of injuries. Pedro and Willian haven’t had too many goal involvements. Perhaps, the return of Ruben Loftus-Cheek could be the solution to this.

Consistency

Every title-winning Chelsea team has been known to be consistent. When Chelsea won the league under Conte, that team went on a 13-game winning streak. The first title under Mourinho was achieved in a similar fashion. In 2010, under Ancelotti, that team scored goals for fun.

The same cannot be said about Lampard’s team. They lose games at home even to relegation battlers. This current Chelsea team finds it difficult to put a string of wins together. No team can triumph with such a terrible record.

Defensive stability

The only area where Frank has gotten right defensively is at the right-back position. Reece James has been phenomenal and he has a big future ahead of him. Chelsea has a left-back problem and it is obvious. Emerson Palmieri started the season like a house on fire but the injury sustained on International duty in September slowed down his momentum. Marcos Alonso has always been suspect whenever he is played in a four-man defense. However, to his credit, he seemed to have regained some of his abilities before the break. There are talks of purchase in that position and that would make a lot of sense.

At the heart of the defense, Lampard hasn’t decided on his ideal pairing. He has four good center-backs but there isn’t any chemistry between them. He has to fix this if Chelsea hopes to rival Liverpool or City next season.
