Chelsea target Dries Mertens has agreed to sign a new three-year contract extension worth €4m a year, plus €2.5m signing bonus with Napoli, according to transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio.

He wrote: “The decisive acceleration by De Laurentiis dates back to yesterday evening: the president increased the offer, equaling that of Inter Milan.

“And Dries immediately decided to stay. Two and a half million to the player at the time of signing the new contract, a biennial of four million per year plus bonuses.

“This is the basis of the new agreement that should bind the parties until 2022. The player's signature is still missing, but only the last details remain to be defined.”

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard tried unsuccessfully to sign the Belgian in January and there were reports that he remained in contact before this latest development.

It seems it's time for Lampard to look elsewhere as the forward looks set to sign a renewal with Napoli as reported by Di Marzio tonight, and another reliable Italian based journalist Carlo Alvino told Napolista a few days ago.

“To date, an objective assessment of the situation can be made by saying, for those who are my sources, that Mertens continues to make a broad assessment,” Alvino said.

“To date, he has not decided to play Inter as I have read, or Chelsea, I know that both have been targeted, but from what I know the offer made by Napoli is still at stake. Mertens did not say no to Napoli, this is the news I am giving you.”

With Mertens arrival at Stamford Bridge is looking doom at the moment, Chelsea will set their sights elsewhere as they look to replace Willian and Pedro who are likely to leave the club at the end of the season.
