Former Chelsea caretaker manager Guus Hiddink has opened up on the infamous Chelsea's 2009 Champions League semifinal defeat to Barcelona.

Chelsea needed a win to progress and led the tie through Michael Essien's lone goal but had several opportunities to win the tie but were denied by the match official Tom Henning Ovrebo who had one of the most shocking officiating in recent memory.

“The referee performance surprised me because in the past he'd had perfect performances,” Hiddink told Ziggo Sport, as quoted by Tribal Football.

“Is it the worst refereeing I've ever seen? I think so. This is the only time I thought a match could've been fixed, possibly because UEFA didn't want a repeat of last year's final.”

Barcelona won the tie courtesy of Andre Iniesta's late goal at Stamford Bridge. They went on to beat Manchester United in the final and won the 2009 UEFA Champions League.
